So DTGS came and went and I gotta give mad propz up to all my dawgz that came out. For those who weren't there I basically just ran game on a gigantic set of top 40 continuous blazin' hip-hop and r&b. which essentially amounts to me trying my best to be dj D-Rock (Foxy 99 represent) and throwing up way too much fucking airhorn. Summer in Xanadu pt. 2

The heat is coming on fast and Fritz der Mauseblitz ushers in the reign of the sun god with an offering of soul and solar powered deep house. this was recorded live at outdoor party this spring but really needed more sunlight to achieve maximum effect. This was compiled and mixed with the notion strong collection of both current hits and timeless jamz that would have strong replay value as the summer wears on as opposed to the delightful, albeit somewhat disposable, nature of summerjamz. it's 213.6mb and one file to allow for max flow. clocks in at 1:33:20

Allez Alejandro

And so the blessed event finally occurred and yesterday and the world stopped to view the christening of Lady Gaga's spectular monstrosity that is the video for "Alejandro". It's no secret that I unabashedly adore Gag's latest single. The track shamelessly rides on the same melody of Ace of Base's "Don't Turn Around" to terrific effect for an air of nostalgia that feels contradictorily fresh. The hook swells to such ecstatic heights of superficial passion and operatic desire that the sounds seem to blow across the dance floor like a Latin wind.

Which is perhaps what makes the collaboration of Gaga and Steven Klein so bizarre. The amorous disco-pop "Alejandro" recalls sweaty dancing and beaches, maybe some cliffs near the ocean, exotic fruits perhaps. But no where do I conjure notions of an industrial leather daddy gestapo squad ravage me with blasphemous Magdalenic symbolism abounding. This isn't to say that the "Alejandro" video isn't fantastic, just not what we were all probably expecting. The video feels like a strange marriage of Madonna's early '90s industrial glamour combined with the unaffected fascism and emotional depravity of Liliana Cavani's 1974 film, "Il Portiere de Notte." But when Gaga is involved, if we're honest with ourselves, what can really be expected? I felt underwhelmed for probably the first four minutes or so of the video until she finally emerged from the breakdown in an almost professional looking outfit that screams of Madonna's video for "Vogue," and the music swells and there are machine guns on her tits. Never underestimate the strength of superior firepower.

In short, this...

plus this...

equals this.

Arboreal Communion

It's been just over 10 years since the last official Burzum record and, as of its creation, just shy of 16 years since Varg Vikernes played a guitar. That's a long time for the myth behind the terrifying and enigmatic Vikernes to grow and fester with anticipation. For those that aren't aware, Vikernes was paroled in May of 2009 after serving a little less than 16 years of a 21 year sentence for the murder of then Mayhem guitarist Euronymous, and allegedly burning several ancient churches to the ground. Regardless, Belus reemphasizes that there is a reason he's such a legendary figure in the black metal scene beyond his mania. The album presents a return to form for Burzum from the dark ambient synthesizer projects he produced during his early years in prison and harkens back to the more primal stripped down black metal of his first self-titled release. The album revels in its pagan heritage and rampages like a viking through a forest. On "Kaimadalthas' Nedstigning" we see the rare harmonic side of Burzum, with guitar riffs that almost feel like double time post-punk as opposed to black metal. But who's to tell Varg Vikernes what is and isn't black metal? It's all about the ambience that's encapsulated within the record, that lingering air of grimness and vicious self-righteousness that all other false metals fail to recreate. Vikernes is back, and we can only hope he keeps himself out of trouble.

Seasonal Strange Fruit

Pomegranates are probably my favorite fruit. Which is saying something as I'm not really the biggest fan of that particular food group. It's just that every seed is bursting with that forbidden sour juice and that raw crunch of the seed, you can't help but just pop them one after another. It's like this with those elusive psychedelic pop morsels that came out of Persia during the '60s and '70s. Andy Votel's Finders Keepers label continues to impress with its release of Pomegranates, the compilation does a fantastic job at accessibly recapturing some of the lost treasures of the vibrant music scene.

Also, it brings to light the eerie similarity between Googoosh's "Talagh" and "Heaven on their Minds" from the Jesus Christ Superstar score. See for yourself.

Googoosh - Talagh

coincidence? i think not.
